Marian Koshland Science Museum Forms Partnership with Science Centre Singapore

May 15, 2008Washington, DC –In a new collaboration, the Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences is licensing several components of its global warming and infectious diseases exhibits to the Science Centre Singapore. The partnership marks an expansion of the Koshland Science Museum's efforts to bring its work to international audiences by teaming up with other museums and science centers around the world.

Koshland Science Museum Annouces Winter Programs

December 10, 2007 – Washington, DC –The Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences has lined up an exciting new slate of events to engage the public in some of today's most fascinating science. Programs beginning in January 2008 will include an illustrated tour of the fundamental concepts of science by award-winning writers Natalie Angier and Rick Weiss, an examination of the state of the world's coral reefs, and a discussion with the hosts and producer of Radio Lab, the popular National Public Radio show.

Briefing on a New Web Resource to Address Global Drinking Water Crisis


September 5, 2007 - The U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Global Health and Education Foundation are joining more than 125 science, engineering, and medical academies around the world to take action on the global drinking water crisis by launching the Web site, “Safe Drinking Water Is Essential,” www.drinking-water.org.

Koshland Science Museum Announces Fall Programs


August 10, 2007 - Washington, DC - Beginning this September, the Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences will bring top scientists and policy experts together in a series of public programs to discuss important scientific issues of the day, including the global burden of infectious disease, the latest breakthroughs in energy technology, and scientific and ethical issues surrounding stem cell research. On the cultural side, the Princeton Laptop Orchestra will appear at the museum in their debut performance in Washington, D.C.

In Memoriam: Daniel E. Koshland Jr. (1920-2007)

July 25, 2007 - Washington, DC - Daniel E. Koshland Jr., eminent scientist and founder of the Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences, died in California on July 23. Koshland was a professor of biochemistry at the University of California at Berkeley and long-time member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Koshland Science Museum Announces Spring Events

March 16, 2007 - Washington, DC – The Marian Koshland Science Museum has put together a schedule of public events to usher in the spring. To celebrate its new interactive exhibit, Infectious Disease: Evolving Challenges to Human Health, the Marian Koshland Science Museum will host a day of hands-on activities for the entire family on Saturday, March 31. Addicted to Energy? Find Out with Lights At Night Interactive Exhibit

February 24 , 2006 - Washington, DC - Lights at Night, an engaging interactive display developed by the Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences, is now available for museums, libraries, schools and other venues. Since the museum opened in April 2004, Lights at Night has intrigued over 50,000 visitors with its hands-on comparison of energy use through the exploration of real satellite imagery. A special licensing agreement with the Koshland Science Museum will allow other venues to share Lights at Night with visitors and students across the country.

Marian Koshland Science Museum Receives NIH Funding For Infectious Diseases Exhibit

December 27, 2005 - Washington, DC - The Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Science Education Partnership Awards. The museum will use the $1.3 million award to fund a new interactive exhibit based on 50 National Academies studies related to infectious diseases. The new exhibit will engage visitors through interactive displays that explore the impact of personal and national decisions that could affect their health.

Science Writers Take on the Challenge of Exhibit Design

March 3 , 2005 - Washington, DC - Forty science writers visited the Marian Koshland Science Museum on February 15 to find out more about exhibit design and development. Visiting as part of the a workshop, the writers offered their ideas on how to build an exhibit based on National Academies work. All participants belong to the National Association of Science Writers, an association of thousands of freelance and staff writers, as well as public information officers. Those who took part came away with a better understanding of what it takes to craft an exhibition on controversial issues that both educates and engages the visitor.

Marian Koshland Science Museum Welcomes 20,000th Visitor and Prepares for One Year Anniversary Celebration

February 17, 2005 - Washington, DC - The Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences welcomed its 20,000th visitor, just 9 months after opening. J.R. Holloway, a shy but ambitious 4th grader and aspiring scientist, was surprised to learn that he was the museum’s 20,000th visitor Monday morning. He and his mother Linda Holloway were visiting DC from Grapevine, Texas.

New Models Uncover Path of Deadly Tsunami
Recently back from the Indian Ocean region, two tsunami experts emphasize the need for better education and an improved warning system

February 7, 2005 – Washington, DC - In medieval Japan, people believed that tsunamis came to shore when a giant sea serpent flapped its tail. The devastating waves would cease, said the myth, if a large bag of rice were placed on the serpent’s head.

Though modern-day predictions and solutions are quite a bit more sophisticated, they still remain incomplete, as two scientists detailed at a talk at the Marian Koshland Science Museum on Monday February 7. Civil engineers Philip Liu of Cornell University and Costas Synolakis of the University of Southern California presented preliminary models that recreate the devastating path of the December 26 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Marian Koshland Science Museum Awarded 2004 Galaxy Award for Global Warming: Facts and our Future Exhibit

November 12, 2004 – Washington, DC - The Marian Koshland Science Museum was recently awarded the 2004 Bronze Galaxy Award for its Global Warming: Facts and our Future exhibit. The exhibit was one of over 400 entries from 14 countries submitted to the 15th Annual International Galaxy award competition. The exhibit ranked in the top third, winning the 2004 Bronze Galaxy Award for the best Museum Exhibit Design. The award honors Bowman Design Group for their creative efforts.

Koshland Science Museum Attracts 10,000th Visitor
Public Programs Using Forensics and DNA Tests to Be Launched in August


August 2 , 2004- Washington, DC - The Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences welcomed its 10,000th visitor on Saturday only three months after opening its doors. Darlene Kamya from Raleigh, North Carolina was surprised when what she thought would be a simple visit to the museum turned into a celebration.

Marian Koshland Science Museum Grand Opening

April 16 , 2004- Washington, DC - Discover DC’s newest museum as its doors open to the public – revealing the science driving today’s headlines and affecting our lives every day. The Grand Opening will spring into action with performances by Velocity Stilts – acrobats who have adapted the latest technology used in artificial limbs into high-performance stilts. The big-band sound of the Junkyard Saints will also entertain as museum interns from Banneker High School engage visitors in hands-on science activities. Museum admission will be free on opening day only – general admission rates will go into effect Saturday, April 24.
