Putting DNA to Work
Tour Of The Basics

Overview of Activity
This interactive web activity introduces students to DNA, genes, chromosomes, proteins, inheritance and traits.

Activity Type: Online
URLs: http://gslc.genetics.utah.edu/units/basics/tour/
Level of Difficulty: Introductory or Intermediate
Amount of Time Required for Activity: One 45-minute period

Description
This activity can be used as an introductory overview to DNA before visiting the museum, or as a post-museum activity to help summarize the importance of DNA sequences.

What is DNA? - The location, structure and function of DNA in the cell are explained in this section.

What is a Gene? - Students study the hemoglobin gene to understand gene products and mutations.

What is a Chromosome? - Students learn how a large quantity of DNA can fit into a cell using packaging. They can also explore chromosomes in other organisms.

What is Protein? - Students learn about the different roles proteins play in their body.

What is Heredity? - Students learn how probability is involved in the transmission of traits

What is a Trait? - Students learn about traits for physical, behavioral and predisposition to a medical condition.

These activities are produced by the Genetic Science Learning Center.
